Year 9 and 10 programmes reflect the relevant achievement objectives of English in the New Zealand Curriculum.

At Year 9 and 10 a series of common contexts (units) has been developed by the English Department (see below). This ensures a common minimum coverage of learning outcomes and achievement objectives, facilitates moderation, allows some common data to be collected about student achievement, helps co-ordinate resource development, ensures consistent preparation for senior courses and facilitates programme review.

A Unit/Context Planner has been completed and centrally filed for each of the common units/contexts. These are available for teachers to modify. Attached to each unit planner is an assessment schedule and an annotated student exemplar. These are filed and become a valuable resource for teacher planning and moderation.

A sample Unit/Context Planner is included below.

Within the contexts (units) teachers have freedom to develop the teaching, learning and assessment strategies to best meet the needs of individual students. Teachers can be creative in the way they combine or extend some of the contexts/units but the specified learning outcomes and assessed achievement objectives for each unit/context must be met in the course of the year. The common units do not cover the whole year so teachers have flexibility to design others.
